Nelson's obit: The Guthrie Daily Leader, 20 June 1927 GUTHRIE PIONEER DIES HERE SUNDAY - John J Nelson Succumbs After Long Illness - Another of Guthrie's pioneer citizens, John J. Nelson, died Sunday morning at his home, 1304 W. Cleveland after more than a year of complicated illness. He is the father of Edgar A. Nelson, Guthrie fire chief. Nelson, who was 66 years old at the time of his death was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, January 20, moving later to Elmo, Missouri, where he was married to Nancy E. Tibbets in 1882. Nelson came to Logan county in 1889 and settled on a homestead three miles west of Seward. He moved to Guthrie in 1894 where he resided up to the time of his death. Nelson was prominent in politics here, having been a deputy sheriff for one term, registrar of deeds for two terms and held a position on the Guthrie police department from 1908 until 1923. He was a member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic Order at Elmo, MO and a member of the Yeoman Lodge of Guthrie. Mr. Nelson leaves a wife, Mrs. J. J. Nelson (Nancy Elizabeth Tibbetts) and eleven children: Thomas A. Nelson, Mt. Wilson, California, Edgar A. Nelson, Mrs. George L. Anderson (Rhoda Elizabeth), Mrs. J. L Griswold (Florence A. (Bonnie)), Dennis, Hiram, Ruth, and Clifton Nelson, Guthrie, Mrs. Wilbur Johnson (Marie E. (Mary Ellen)), West Frankfort, Illinois, Mrs. Robert Kessler (Nancy Evalena), Oklahoma City and Joe Nelson, Arkansas City. He leaves three brothers, George and Tom Nelson of San Diego, California, and Harry Nelson of Kansas City, Missouri and three sister, Mrs. Isham Ray (Aunt Hattie Lee), Kansas City, MO., Mrs. Agnes Vochell (Sarah Agnes) and Mrs. Nora Roe (Medora May) of San Francisco, California. Funeral services will be held at the West Side Methodist church, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be made in Fairview Cemetery at Navina, Oklahoma."
