E. "Bill" Nelson William Edgar "Bill" Nelson, 81, Guthrie Businessman and land developer, died at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City, Sunday, December 29, 1991. Mr. Nelson was born May 31, 1910 in Guthrie, the son of Edgar Amsy and Alta Gladys Bryan Nelson. He was a 1929 graduate of Guthrie High School. He established Bill Nelson Sporting Goods in 1937, then closed it to enter the U. S. Army in April 1943. He served his country until the end of WWII and reopened the business in 1946 which was operated in the same location until 1982. He began development of Nelson Heights housing addition, south of Guthrie, in 1979, fulfilling the longtime dream of his father. Mr. Nelson married Zelma Mae Austin, who survives him, September 19, 1931. He is also survived by two sons and their wives, William Paul and Lena Elizabeth Montague Nelson of Arlington, Texas and Joseph Andrew and Jenny Lee English Nelson of Stillwater; three daughters and their husbands, Nancy Lou and Norman A Parker of Norman, Virginia Sue and Neil Scheihing of Guthrie and Sandra Maree and Chuck Burtcher of Guthrie; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Nell Austin, Katherine Austin and Betty Austin of Guthrie; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Marvin A. and Dean Austin of Waggoner and Charles A. and Rita Austin of Guthrie. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John Edgar and one brother, John James Nelson. Mr. Nelson was an avid outdoorsman and will be remembered fondly by all who joined him in the enjoyment of those pastimes. He was a founding member of the Logan County Sportsman Club; a member of the American Legion, Post #58 and the National Rifle Association. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Henry P. Roberson and Father Steve Austin (a nephew) officiating. Burial will be in Summit View Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Bill Gerhards, Bernard Short, Ralph Blair, James Gummow, Joe Hall, Joe Underwood, John Furrow, Ted Hurley, Ken English, John Stadler, Raymond Smedley and Ed Berg. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
