Mrs. Hicks was born February 3, 1932, in Bebe, Texas, the daughter of Celestino and Julia Pena. She died Saturday, October 21, 2000, at Mercy Health Love County in Marietta. She had lived in Love County most of her life. She and Jimmy Emery Lee "Tex" Hicks were married on January 12, 1952, in Gainesville, Texas, and he preceded her in death on October 10, 1972. Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, quilting and doing embroidery and needlepoint. She was of the Catholic faith. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Davie and Kristi Hicks of Gainesville; two daughters and son-in-law, Yvonne and Chester Carter Jr. of Gainesville and Eddie L. Thomason and Radio Shelton of Leonard, Texas; one brother, Johnny Pena of Buckeye, Arizona; nine grandchildren, Dian Lee Gay Salazar, Jimmie T. Howard, Jason Carter, John and Louana Carter, Dustin E. Hicks, Timothy Birdwell, Jeremy Hicks, Crystal Tharp and Nathaniel Hicks; and four great-grandchildren, Kortni Salazar, Kara Salazar, Kassie Salazar and CaSandra Evon Lee Carter. Mrs. Hicks was also preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Elaine Hicks Tharp on February 23, 1998. Serving as pallbearers were Jonafur Boatner, Alfonso Ramon, David Hart, Marion Gilbert, Kenneth "Stokes" Gilbert and Bodie Gilbert. Honorary pallbearer was Jimmie Timothy Howard.
