Mark Gunnels officiating. Mrs. Shankles was born September 20, 1921, in Forestburg, Texas, the daughter of L.T. "Red" and Rosie Jane Monroe Kitchens. She died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta. She lived at Burneyville all of her life. She and William Otis "Buster" Shankles were married July 2, 1938, in Marietta, and he preceded her in death December 1, 1977. Mrs. Shankles attended school at Burneyville. In addition to being a working rancher, she was employed at Marietta Sportswear for 12 years and Little Brownie Bakery for 22 years. She enjoyed fishing, watching birds and her cows, dancing, sitting on the porch quilting, riding a four-wheeler and gardening. Mrs. Shankles also enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the Burneyville Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Sonny and Sheila Shankles of Marietta, Don and Cissy Shankles of Granbury, Texas, Charles and Sue Shankles of Marietta, and Troy and Anita Shankles of Burneyville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia Stewart of Ardmore, Linda and Jerry Stewart of Burneyville, and Vickie Shankles of Marietta; a brother, Claude Kitchens of Hawthorne, California; a sister, Gladis Gibson of El Paso, Texas; a special friend, Phillip Yochum of Duncanville, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shankles was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, John Kitchens and L.T. Kitchens. Pallbearers were Tony Stewart, Bret Higgs, Kent Shankles, Kerry Don Shankles, Scott Freeman, William Shankles and Ryan Shankles. Honorary pallbearers were Rex Harrill, Marion Hicks, Johnny Hartman, Lance Shankles, Billy W. Shankles, Jerry Stewart, Jack Heffington and Corky Cartwright.
