Gary Underwood officiating. Mrs. Underwood was born April 14, 1942, at Marietta, the daughter of Hardin and Opal Hogue Johnson and the granddaughter of W.A. and Pearl Johnson, Love County residents for many years. She died Sunday, November 5, 2000, at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of Boone County, Arkansas, for six years and was a prior resident of Clifton, Virginia. Mrs. Underwood grew up in Pauls Valley, a graduate of Pauls Valley High School in 1960, and was a 1964 graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Underwood was a Home Service Consultant with Oklahoma Gas and Electric at Fort Smith from 1964-1966, and taught home economics at Orlando High School from 1966 to 1968. She and David C. Underwood of Miami were married September 5, 1964, at the First Baptist Church in Pauls Valley and she traveled with her husband during his tours of duty in the U.S. Air Force; Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, 1970-1972; Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, 1973-1980 and Diplomatic Mission Air Attache, West Africa, 1983-1985. Mrs. Underwood worked as Consular Affairs Officer and secretary to the U.S. Embassy in Liberia, West Africa, Washington, D.C., 1985-1994, was a home economics teacher at Herndon High School, Virginia, and moved to Harrison in 1994 where she taught at North Arkansas College. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood made their home and set up their ranch at Harmon. Survivors include her husband, David C. Underwood of Harrison; two sons and daughters-in-law, 1st Lt. David C. Underwood, Jr. and 1st Lt. Melissa Underwood of Germany, and Sean C. and Gretchen Underwood of Broad Run, Virginia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Underwood was preceded in death by her parents. Interment was in Patton Cemetery under the direction of Christeson Funeral Home. Published in the Marietta Monitor, Love County, November 17, 2000.
