She was born Nov. 17, 1919 in Marietta, Oklahoma to Josh & Minnie Culwell, the third of seven children. Mary spent her early life working about the farm. The family decided to escape the Dust Bowl and in 1936, worked the farm fields along the route to California, a trip that lasted 3 months. The family settled in McFarland, CA to be near work. Mary married Clarence Francis "Red" McGehee on July 8, 1938. They became parents of four children, two girls and two boys. The couple lived and worked in and around the Wasco-Pond area for many years. Mary was on the job until her health forced her to retire at age 80. Mary was as generous as she could be, offering assistance, without question, to family and friends in need. She was a second mother to many children in her lifetime. She thought it her job and duty to provide a beautifully crafted, crocheted afghan to each family member and with each birth or marriage, a new afghan was completed. Mary was known for the many plants and colorful flowers she maintained around her home. One of her greatest pleasures was having the family congregate at her home on each of the holidays throughout the year, serving her traditional homemade peach cobbler. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Red; brothers, John Perry "J.P." Culwell & Clydie Culwell; sisters, Thelma Wood and Sarah Margaret Culwell; son, Gervis "Gale" McGehee.
