Vaughn on March of 1839 in Indiana. In addition, the birth place for both parents is also listed as Indiana. The census also lists his wife Mattie E. and six of their children at the time. In 1861, the Civil War broke out between the North and the South. George served in the war. Mattie E. Webb, George's wife drew a Oklahoma Confederate's widow's pension. In 1881, George is in Woodville, Oklahoma where he marries his wife, Martha Ellen Webb. George married Martha also known as Mattie Ellen Webb on New Year’s Day in 1881. She is believed to have been one quarter Cherokee Indian. Mattie was born in 1859 location unknown. Mattie’s father, John Webb passed away in Missouri the exact date is unknown. In which case, Mattie may have been from Missouri. George and Mattie had nine children. Their first child, Minnie Caro was born the day after their first anniversary in 1882. Two years and one month later their second child, George Bennet is born location unknown. According to family members, George went by his middle name of Bennet. In 1886 in Preston Bend, Texas, which is now under Lake Texoma their third child, Walter Edmond is born. In 1888, their fourth child, Hattie Ellen is born location unknown. However, two years later, the fifth child, John Thomas, also known as Johnnie is born and the children are attending school in Kenefic, Oklahoma. In 1906, at the age of forty-five Mattie gives birth to her last child, Arlen Paul supposedly in Missouri. Fourteen years later, a couple of weeks before his seventy-seventh birthday in 1920 George passed away in Madill, Oklahoma in Marshall County. The funeral arrangements were done by Watts Funeral Home in Madill, Oklahoma. He is buried in Cumberland Cove Cemetery. Between 1920 and 1931, Mattie is living with one of her children in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Eleven years after George’s death in 1931, Mattie applied for a Confederate Widow’s pension. Only two years later in 1933, Mattie passed away in Rush Springs, Oklahoma in Grady County. Of the nine known children born to Mattie E. Webb and George Washington Vaughn all nine are believed to have reached adulthood. *************** Now the puzzling part *************************** This all supposedly true. However, I have found no proof as to the existence of Mexico, other than the fact that my great,great-grandfather was alive and must have parents. During the middle 1860’s George W. Vaughn married his first wife Mexico in Arkansas. Mexico is rumored to have been an Indian Chief’s daughter. Mexico did not speak any English and the actual spelling of her name is not known. It is believed that George owned land between the Black and White River in Arkansas. Research leads me to believe that the land presumed owned would be in Independence County, Arkansas. However, land records do not have a George listed in Independence county in the 1860's. George and Mexico move to Oklahoma and have their first child sometime between 1863 and 1865. The reason for George and Mexico’s move to Oklahoma is not known for certain. However, The Homestead Act went into effect on January 1, 1863, which was a major incentive for many individuals to settle in the West. The Homestead Act stated that the individual staking the claim had to be either the head of a family, 21 years old, or a veteran of 14 days of active service in the U.S. armed forces. Also, the homesteader had to be a citizen or had to have filed a declaration of intent to become a citizen before acquiring a tract of land in the public domain not exceeding 160 acres. To acquire a title to the land the homesteader, was obliged to settle on or cultivate the homestead for five years. In 1865, they are living in Woodville, Oklahoma in Marshall County where their second child, James Monroe Vaughn is born. In 1869, their third child, Charley Vaughn is born location unknown. However, by 1874 they have moved to Missouri where their last child, William Alford Vaughn is born. By 1881, George is married to Martha Webb.
