Taliaferro Was First Person to Be Buried in Madill Cemetery A former Commander of Fort Washita was the first person to be buried in the Madill cemetery. He was Lieut. Col. Thomas Dorsey Taliaferro. Colonel Taliaferro’s home originally was in Virginia. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. In addition to his command at Fort Washita, Colonel Taliaferro also was in charge of Boggy Depot at one time. He lived in Louisiana and Texas before finally coming to the Indian Territory. He was the grandfather of Norborne Buckner Taliaferro, Robert Dorsey Taliaferro and George Taliaferro all of whom now live in Madill. (He was also the grandfather of Mary Byrd Taliaferro French and LoRene Madison Taliaferro Reirdon) After Colonel Taliaferro retired he made his home here in Madill with his sons, and was living here up until the time of his death in 1907. When Colonel Taliaferro died, the Taliaferros (his sons D.B. Taliaferro and W.N. Taliaferro) donated land for the establishment of the Woodberry Forest cemetery, (named for the home in Virginia of his wife Eliza Lewis Madison) and he was the first person to be buried there. All previous burials had been in Madill-Oakland cemetery.
