The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Source: MADILL RECORD JUNE 7, 1928 ------------------------------------------------------------------ DUGAN WHITING DIES IN SHERMAN HOSPITAL SUNDAY FUNERAL SERVICE HELD MONDAY AFTERNOON AT FAMILY RESIDENCE WAS MADILL BANKER 22 YEARS Daniel Dugan Whiting, 43, president of Madill National bank died in Sherman Hospital at Sherman, Texas, Sunday afternoon at 5:55 o'clock having been carried to the hospital a week ago from the Saturday preceding for treatment. Funeral service was held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, being conducted by Rev. Argus J. Hamilton, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. Fuller, an old time friend of the Whiting family in Grayson county, Texas. Special song service was had. The body was brought back overland from Sherman Sunday night by the John C. Dannell Funeral Home and interment made in Woodbury-Forest cemetery under the direction of the Watts Funeral Home. Madill business houses closed at 3:30 for the funeral service. Not only did most of Madill attend but people from all over the county and north Texas gathered to pay their last respects to a man who had been a friend. BORN IN GRAYSON COUNTY Dugan Whting was born near Bells, Grayson county, Texas a few miles east of Sherman, September 12, 1884, and at the time of his death was 43 years, 8 months and 21 days old. He attended school in Grayson county and when still a young man in 1904, came to Madill where he was connected with the First National bank for about two years, then going with the Madill National bank where he worked up the the presidency. SUCCEEDS TO PRESIDENCY Mr. Whiting was made president of this institution some three years ago upon the death of the late W. S. Derrick, one of the pioneer Methodist ministers of southern Oklahoma. Preceding this election, he had served as cashier for many years. On March 26, 1906, at Oakland occured the marriage of Mr. Whiting and Miss Lillian Dale Sacra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sacra, now residents of Denison, Texas. Four children were born to this union, all living but Lillian Byrd. The children are: Edward C. Whiting, Dugan Whiting Jr., and little Miss Noweta Whiting. The former is a graduate of Madill highschool two years ago and is now employeed as a bookkeeper at the Madill National bank, having attended Austin college in Sherman, Texas one year and A & M college at Stillwater the first half of this year. Mrs. Whiting died February 26, 1920. Mr. Whting was married a second time in November, 1922, to Miss Zelma Jagers of Madill. PARENTS SURVIVE In addition to his widow and three children, the deceased is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. D. F. Whiting of Denison, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Whiting lived in Madill for a few years but returned to Denison serval years ago. Two sisters and three brothers also survive. The sisters are Mrs. H. A. McDaniel of Bonham, Texas, and Mrs. D. B. Taliaferro of Sherman, Texas. The brothers are Claud Whiting of Bells, Texas, John Whiting of Denison, Texas, and Henry Whiting of Savoy, Texas. HELPS BUILD CHURCH For the past few weeks the deceased has given quite a bit of his time to the building of the Methodist church, being chairman of the building committee.
