Submitted by: Marie Pittman on 6Sep2000 =============================================================== Death has visited our Friends again and taken J. R. Pittman. He was born in Brownstown, IL Dec 8 1853. Passed away at Vinita, Okla, Aug 24, 1938, at the age of 84 yrs, 8 mos, and 16 days. At the age of 26, he married Nancy Jane clow of Alma, IL. The wedding took place at Vandalia, IL. The young couple traveled across the Great Plains in a wagon drawn by an ox team to western Kansas where they made their home for many years. They left there and went to Siloam Spring, Ark., and then on to Oklahoma. Eight children were born to this pioneer couple, five of whom are living to mourn their loss. They are Mrs. Winnie Bradley of Goodman, MO; Carl Pittman, Pittsburgh, Kans; Fred Pittman of Kansas City, MO; Florence Ulrich of Locust Grove, and John Pittman, Joplin, MO. Mr. Pittman was a man of industry and diligence. He worked until the day he died. He was in the mercantile business at Rose for several years. Also he was a builder. he built shops, garages, two store buildings, and a residence at Rose. Other buildings were built at Pennsacola and near Vinita since he was 60 years of age. Death alone brought an end to his diligence. He belonged to the Christian Church from young manhood to middle life. He then became interested in the Unity School of Christianity of Kansas City, MO and Scientific Christian of Denver Colorado, schools and publications of Christian living and healing, which he studied and followed all through life. Mr. Pittman was a calm, self-possessed man, who attended to his own affairs and molested no one. A grand and noble human principle. To the bereaved I extend my heartfelt sympathy. O spirit freed from bondage, Rejoice they work is done! The weary world is 'neath they feet, Thou brighter than the sun! Awake and breath the living air of our celestial clime! Awake to love, which knows no change, Thou, who hast done with time! Awake! Ascend! Thou are not now With those of mortal birth; The living God hath touched thy lips, Thou! Who hast done with earth. By Carrie M. Couch Rose, Okla. [this is copied from the actual obituary from a newspaper in the area [no name of paper]. does anyone know anything about Carrie M. Couch? Note: Mr. Pittman lived in Mayes Co from early 1900 [after divorce from Nancy Jane Clow]until his death. He and Nancy lived in Siloam Springs, Benton Co AR from 1880-early 1900's. There he practiced dentistry, owned/operated cooper plant, & was builder. The Pittman subdivision in Siloam Springs is named for him.]
