G. M. Bits and Pieces ************************* You can say this much for Purcell. Its sights are set for high aiming. For example, the Purcell boosters readily admit that all of the oil development from Norman to Pauls Valley and from Asher to Chickasha__ and this includes much of the Maysville and Lindsay activity__is centered in Purcell. You may recall that the big gunnery school operated by the navy just east of Lexington was designated as a Purcell enterprise. They are not lacking in nerve and eagerness, so necessary to a growing town. ************************* The Purcell chamber of commerce has one of the finest community programs we have observed. With a budget of $7000 the chamber has developed dairying(sic) to a high degree in a few years, and at least one new "grad A" dairy barn is being added every week. One Thousand acres of eroded lands in the Purcell area are being reclaimed each season by soil conservation measures, and the lands put back in grass. The chamber is out to establish a new fairgrounds, and a project to gravel all the alleys in town is under way. When hard-fists business folks join in movements like these Main street's lights will continue to glow. *************************** Center parking is permissible in Purcell and we like it . Officials and merchants alike seem to agree that when cash customers come to town to do some buying they should be able to find places to park their cars. In most of the towns the "through" traffic can whiz on by; but in Purcell the emphasis is placed on satisfying the customers who keep the town alive with their trading. **************************** Yessum, the Methodist women, bless'em, do much of the club cooking in Purcell, as in most others. The ham, beans, spuds, salad and pie served the Rotarians were as tasty as any we've enjoyed. The cooking and serving was done by Mrs. Hardin Ballard, Mrs. D. D. Chandler, Mrs. A. L. Moseley, Mrs. Neil McElderry, Mrs. Frank Layton, Mrs. Aruthur Herron and Mrs. Roger Cole. **************************** Mayor Leo Cobb, new on the job promises the town a public library and we betcha he delivers. Recently the people of Purcell were asked to vote $91,000 in bonds for a new school building; they voted 886 to 52 for it. In so many towns, bond issues for improvements are falling. Not in Purcell. ***************************** Gib Cody suggested that one of Purcell's big need is a good fishing hole nearby. We agree. There are more dry-land and street-corner fishermen in Purcell than anywhere. Going out for creek-bed catfish, they do all right and stinkbait is manufactured in the town, but when the fishermen's, families get hungry for crappie and bass they have to go to Texoma, Murray or Lawtonka to get'em. Let Purcell have a fishing hole, please. Norman and Chickasha could use it too. ******************************* Very little playing is done on the sandy bed of the Canadian river at Purcell, because it is quicksand so much of the time; sometimes a fellow bogs down out there.
