Ashford Orvil L. Ashford, 85, of Sulphur, died Oct. 23, 2005. Services were Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Central Baptist Church, south of Sulphur, with Bro. Mark McGehee officiating. Burial was at Drake Cemetery in Sulphur. Ashford was born April 11, 1920, in Blanchard to Oland and Grace (Corley) Ashford. He moved to Los Angeles, Calif., and worked three years as a police officer for the LAPD. He returned to Blanchard shortly after WWII began and joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1942 though 1945. He volunteered for the 103rd Infantry Regiment, known as the "Gold Cross," 33rd Division, Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war, he again returned home to Blanchard, where he farmed and did odd jobs as a carpenter and butcher until 1951. He married Peggy Sue Lee on Aug. 9, 1946. He worked in construction, building bridges all over Oklahoma, including bridges on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike. He came to Sulphur in 1964 to work on the Arbuckle Lake Dam. During this time, he had a heart attack at the age of 45. He remained in Sulphur until his death. He is survived by five children, Gary Ashford and his wife, Sarah, Deann Conyer and her husband, Paul, Vivian Quistian and her husband, Pablo, of Sulphur, David Ashford of Mill Creek and Troy Ashford and wife, Carol, of Safford, Ariz., a sister, Nina Boyd of Naples, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 2, 1992, his parents and a brother. Pallbearers were Sammie Jones, Roy Rogers, David Pittman, Jeremy Watson, Jason Conyer and Michael Ashford. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Thompson, Windell Courtney, Mickey Warren and his great-grandsons.
