Edythe was born Edythe Beatrice Cummings in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on September 30, 1911, and grew up in and around Arkansas and Oklahoma, where her father was a Baptist Minister and teacher. She was the oldest daughter in a family of eight children. Edythe married Porter Houston Freeman in 1932, in Dibble, Oklahoma. Edythe and Porter were "dirt" farmers and it was in Dibble, Oklahoma, where they had their two children, Charles, born in 1933 and Deveryl, in 1935. Porter and Charles came to Northern California in the 1940's to find work, and once they did they then returned to Oklahoma to get Edythe and Deveryl along with many members of their respective families. They then all migrated to California. They moved around but eventually settled in Oakland, California, where they raised their family. Porter passed away in 1965 after working many years for Del Monte. Edythe worked for Stokleys Van Camps for many years and retired from the company at the age of 65. Deveryl and her family had moved to Auburn in 1968, and after retiring Edythe moved to Auburn in 1980. Up until 2006 Edythe lived at Golden Chain Mobile Home Park, where she met and made many friends over the years. Most recently she had lived at The Homestead in Auburn and at Loomis Care Center in Loomis. Edythe was given the name Mammaw by her oldest grandchild and it stuck. She was known by many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren's friends as Mammaw as they all grew to know and love her as their grandmother. She had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. She loved to play Bingo, to crochet and knit, go to Reno and gamble and loved to garden. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren have always bragged to their friends that she was the lady who put the "pork" in the pork in beans when she was working for Stokleys. Edythe was preceded in death by both of her parents, five of her brothers, one sister, her husband Porter Freeman, in 1965 and son Charles V Freeman in 2004. She is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Deveryl (Dee) and Robert (Buck) Crouse, her sister Geraldine Saxlund (Harold), sister-in-law Vetha Isbel and her brother Robert Cummings (Betsey); granddaughters, Paula Chapman (Michael) and Nancy Thompson (Rich), grandson Chuck Crouse (Cindy), special "granddaughter" Peggy, as well as many nieces and nephews. Edythe (or Mammaw) is also survived by nine great grandchildren, Timm (Sherri), Mandi (Billy), Nikki, Alyssa and Jaden Chapman; Kyle and Kayla Thompson and Christa and Cadee Crouse. Edythe is also survived by two great-great grandchildren Kevin Fredrick and Devyn Chapman. A memorial service will be held at Lasilla Funeral Chapel in Auburn on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Edythe's ashes will be buried with her beloved husband Porter in Oakland California.
