White known to all in Purcell as ‘Uncle George’ died at the family home in Purcell, Sunday November 7, after an illness extending over six months. Services were held at the home Monday at 3:30 p.m. by Rev. W. F. Anderson of Wynnewood, formerly of the Methodist church here and Rev. J. R. Babb of the Christian church. Rev. Anderson gave a talk on the life of Mr. White which was followed by Rev. Babb with a talk. Interment was made in the Hillside cemetery. A large number of friends were present at the services and numerous floral offerings were sent. Mr. White was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, March 28, 1843, being seventy seven years seven months and nine days old, at the time of his death. He came to Purcell thirty one years ago and once engaged in the cattle business which he followed practically all of his life. In his younger days he served for four years in the Confederate army being in many of the big battles of the war, one especially of which might be mentioned being the ‘Battle of the Wilderness’ near Richmond. Up until the time of his death he was the commander of the Sul Ross camp of Confederate Veterans at Purcell. Of this camp Seg Williams is the only member left now. Mr. White was the first sheriff of McClain county being elected after statehood and served for four years in this capacity. There are left to mourn his loss, a wife and two children, Miss Tannie White of Purcell and Mrs. W. D. Trueblood of Corpus Christi, Texas. In the death of Mr. White Purcell has lost one of her oldest and most respected citizens, one who was an assest. of great value to the town.
