Friday afternoon, at 3:30, Bunn Trailor shot and killed George Echols, near the village of Hochawown, 15 miles north of Broken Bow, in McCurtain County. The best information to be had as to the details of the killing are to the effect that both parties were drinking and the quarrel came up over a trivial affair. Trailor and Woods were at work on a house, when Echols came up and began teasing Trailor by yanking him around and pouring coarse sand down his open shirt at the neck and using other means to tantalize him. To this treatment, Trailor remonstrated, telling Echols to quit it or he would hurt him, it is alleged. From this begginning a fight ensued in which Trailor got the worst of it, Echols, being the much stronger and larger man. When the by-standers separated them Trailor went to his car nearby and got out his gun. Woods caught the gun in one hand, and pushed the muzzle toward the ground. In the meanwhile, Echols came up with a club and proceeded to assault both Woods and Trailor, when Trailor leaped to one side and fired. The whole load lodged in Echol's breast and death was instantaneous. Both parties were farmers and resided in the Hochatown community. Echols leaves a large family. Trailor came to town and gave himself up to the officers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
