PARTICIPANTS WERE BROTHER-IN-LAW. John Kilgore is dead and his brother-in-law, Newt Romine is in a serious condition with a gun shot wound in his back, a broken arm and a fractured collar bone, as a result of a family brawl and said to have been garnished with moonshine whiskey, which took place Saturday night at the home of Romine who lives in the county, fifteen miles north of Bethel on Glover River. Kilgore received the full load of a shot gun said to have been in the hands of Romine. The load entered the left breast about seven inches below his shoulder and ranged upward. He died almost instantly. A report is current to the effect that a third party and perhaps others will be linked with the tragedy. Romine's wife is said to have stated that she saw a third man around the place before the killing but did not know who he was. Other evidences, officers say, indicate that others may be implicated in the affair. According to a report, Kilgore remarked to his wife Saturday morning that he was going to the Romine home and get two gallons of whiskey that Romine owed to him. He went on to the Romine home and the two men quarreled and a fight followed. Evidence about the place showed that they might have fought furiously with their fists and clubs before they resorted to shooting. The inside of the house was a wreck and furniture and household goods scattered about the place. Officers from Idabel, accompanied by Chief Stine of Broken Bow went to the scene of the killing Monday and conducted an inquest. Romine will plead self-defense it is said. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
