It is with deepest regret we chronicle the death of our friend and fellow townsman, John Seldon Bain, which occurred at his home in this city, Saturday evening, August 2nd, at 7:00, following one week's illness. Mr. Bain was born December 31, 1881, at Centerville, Texas, and died at the age of 42 years, 7 months and 2 days, and was the son of D.S. and Bettie Bain, both of whom still live at Centerville, though both are advanced in years. Mr. Bain has lived in Broken Bow since the year 1917, and was married to Miss Stella Head, October 5, 1919, who with their two little sons, John Lowry and David Earnest, survive him, also three brothers, Robert Bain, of Centerville, Texas; Joe Bain, of Miles, Texas; and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Carrigon, of Centerville, Texas. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Church and was prominent in Church, lodge and city affairs. Mr. Bain was a useful Christain character, a man whom the entire community regrets to lose, and in the business and social life of Broken Bow his place will be hard to fill. He was in employ of the T. Harrison Furniture and Hardware Co., of this city until about a year ago, when he was employed at the White House Grocery, where he worked until he became ill one week ago. Two of his brothers, Robert Bain and family, of Centerville, Texas, and William Bain, of Galveston, Texas, came to Broken Bow to visit their brother, and upon arrival found him very ill. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church here, and the music was rendered by members of the different choirs of the Churches of the city, and the service was conducted by Rev. A.A. Puckett, pastor of the Methodist church, who impressively used as a text 2nd Corinthians-1-5, "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle, were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens," which was a comforting message to the bereaved ones. He was assisted by the Reverends Horace N. Solliday of the Christian church, and A.A. McReynolds of the Baptist Church. A brief ceremony was held at the cemetery by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, of which organization Mr. Bain was an honored member. Most beautiful floral offerings bespoke the love and esteem in which Mr. Bain and his estimiable family are held. The News joins the host of friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones, in this their hour of sorrow. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
