The two men, who live about 150 yards apart, met on the road and after a few words between them Andrews shot Buchanan with a 12-gauge shotgun, the shot striking him in the right chest and shoulder. Buchanan dropped to the road, dying instantly. Dave Futtrell and Carl Poindexter, who live nearby, heard the shot and rushed to the scene. Andrews must have been ten or twelve feet from Buchanan when he fired the shot, according to Sheriff Bud Stewart. Andrews had placed his gun against the fence and was still on the scene when the sheriff arrived. Buchanan, who was working at the mill here, had his dinner pail with him and had started to work when the shooting occurred. Funeral services were held for Buchanan Saturday at the Holly Creek cemetery. He is survived by his wife and several children. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
