COPPOCK WAS HELD AT CANFIELD CEMETERY SUNDAY AFTERNOON -- WAS LARGELY ATTENDED. One of the most impressive ceremonies in the history of this part of the state was held last Sunday afternoon when the remains of the late Captain Otto H. Coppock were laid to rest in Canfield cemetery, near Idabel. Hundreds of people from all over the entire state and county were in attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings and the many expressions of faith in the departed Commander bespoke his popularity as a citizen and a soldier. The entire ceremony was held under the direction of the Military companies of Idabel. Units from all commands of that city taking part. Maj. William P. Danford, of Oklahoma City, the departed captain's commander, filled the entire throng with admiration and respect for the departed officer when, after having read the service record of Captain Coppock, he spoke of the patriotism, loyality and the great sense of duty that the departed captain had always manifested as an officer under his command. After the beautiful and inspiring talk was made by Major Danford, and a brief funeral service by Rev. H.W. Finney, and the Cisco quartet had sung the wonderful and inspiring songs, the pall bearers carried the remains to the grave under the ever present military escort. The firing squad standing at the edge of the grave rendered the last salute to the departed commander by firing three volleys across the grave. Immediately thereafter "taps" was sounded by the bugler as the body was lowered into the grave. Many telegrams of condolence were received from all over the state from friends of the deceased and his family. The pall bearers were: Major William P. Danford, Captain William M. George, Lieutenant James E. Hall, Lieutenant Samuel W. Stribling, Lieutenant Weaver J. Barkman, and Sergeant Samuel A. Wilson of Oklahoma City. The deceased is survived by his wife and three little children, his father and mother, three brothers and two sisters. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
