CUNNINGHAM KILLED IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT Monday night about 10:00 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cunningham and children were driving a truck load of lumber from the saw mill near Bethel to Broken Bow, and when they arrived at the crest of Carter Creek Mountain beyond Hairpin Bend, the engine went dead and the truck backed off the embankment, turning the load of lumber over on Mr. Cunningham, pinioning him beneath it, terribly crushing and bruising his body, from which he died some 30 to 40 minutes later. Mrs. Cunningham and children succeeded in jumping off the truck, clear of the wreck, and walked back three miles to the mill where she summoned assistance and called Dr. Sherrill, of Broken Bow, who rendered immediate medical aid. Mr. Cunningham is an old resident of Broken Bow, where he and his family are held in the highest esteem, and their many friends deeply regret to learn of his untimely demise. The body was moved to the L.P. Coffey & Sons undertaking parlors here and prepared for shipment to Gainesville, Texas, Tuesday, for interment. Mrs. Cunningham and children accompanied the remains to Gainsville. This is another sad accident, and the entire community joins the News in extending sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
