Calvin Garrison, aged 22, son and only child of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Garrison, who reside about 2 1/2 miles south of Idabel, drowned Sunday afternoon near Tishomingo while in swimming with a party of boy friends. He had been attending Murray State School of Agriculture in that city and was to have graduated there Thursday night of this week. Young Garrison was a member of the 1929 graduating class of Idabel High School and was very popular with his classmates, as well as the citizen- ship, generally, of this town. He was a corporal in the 120th Engineers, Oklahoma National Guard, of which S. Wade Stribling is captain, and that company gave him full military honors at the funeral, which was held Mon- day afternoon at 3 o'clock at Canfield cemetery, 3 1/2 miles southwest of Idabel, with Rev. S.B. Parker, National Guard chaplain, and Methodist Protestant paster, officiating. Prof Tauber of the engineering department of the Murray School of Agriculture, who accompanied the remains to Idabel, made a fine talk at the cemetery that was greatly appreciated. Bois D'Arc Beams, coach, and Ross Lipe, cook, both of the Murray school, also attend- ed the funeral. Young Garrison was a brother of Dave Garrison, who died here about a year ago. Full particulars of the distressing affair are not known here, but it is known that the young man remained under water about five minutes before he could be brought to the surface, after which a pulmotor was used without avail in trying to restore his life. Pall bearers for the funeral were Leon Talbert of Hugo, James Wilson, John Axton, Hardy Hinton, Lieutenant Roy Rowland, and Jake Crouch. The firing squad at the grave was composed of the following members of the National Guard: Lieutenant Oscar Loman, Sergeant William Battiest, Sergeant Ted Swarm, Sergeant Deb Victor, Sergeant Hodges Willie, Corporal Harrison Parker, Private Isom Williams, Private Anias Fisher and Private Frank Shomo, all Choctaw Indians. The bugler was Haywood Wisdom. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
