G.H. Gifford, 54, living in the Shults neighborhood, was accidentally shot and killed while hunting last Thursday afternoon about one o'clock. As given to a Gazette reporter by the county attorney's office, Mr. Gifford, in company with his son-in-law, Jess Compton, started for a hunt Thursday morning about 9:00. About 1:00 in the afternoon they were ready for the return to their home. It seems that a wire fence had to be crossed and it was here that the accident occurred. Mr. Compton had crossed the fence and was some 20 or 30 steps in the lead when he heard the report of Mr. Gifford's gun. He turned at the report of the gun and upon seeing Mr. Gifford reeling, rushed to him. When he reached the wounded man he found that the discharge from the gun had struck just above the heart, the man dying instantly. Mr. Compton doesn't know just how the accident occurred, but it is to be supposed that the gun was discharged while Mr. Gifford was crossing the fence. Interment was made in Denison cemetery, near Idabel, Saturday. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
