She was born Jan. 23, 1906, in Patmus, Ark. She lived most of her life in McCurtain County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Idabel. She was a school teacher for 42 years in McCurtain County School systems. She joined the McCurtain Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in the early 1970's and immediately became devoted to her 'job' as a volunteer. She recorded a total of 6,152 hours of volunteering at the hospital before ill health forced her to retire in 1990. At that time she became a Life Member. She served as president in 1977-78. She is honored by her fellow Auxilians as Volunteer of the Year in 1988. During her term as President, the Auxiliary produced a cook book. She, almost single-handedly, completed that project. She accompanied those who called on businesses to sell ads to pay for the cookbook and she collected the recipes that were used. She brought Christmas decorations that she had used in her classrooms to use at the hospital and contributed plants for use at the hospital and to be sold in the gift shop. She also coordinated blood drives for the community. Most of her volunteer hours were in the gift shop. She is survived by one son, William Robert Hurn of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Norwood, Coffey- Leonard Chapel in Idabel with Rev. Odell Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Canfield Cemetery under direction of Norwood, Coffey-Leonard Funeral Home of Idabel. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
