Jarrett, a professional cook and caterer who in retirement donated her talents to the Rohnert Park Senior Center, died Wednesday at her Victorville home after a long battle with cancer. She was 76. As the wife of an airplane test pilot and engineer, Jarrett had lived all over the country. But after the death of her husband in 1986, she moved from Texas to Rohnert Park to be near her son Greg Jarrett and his family. "She fell in love with Rohnert Park. All of her buddies would get together and visit all the restaurants in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park," he recalled. When Greg, a radio and TV news reporter, was recruited for ABC News to cover the O.J. Simpson murder case in 1994, she moved with his family to Los Angeles. But it broke her heart to leave, he said. She was very active with the Rohnert Park Senior Center, where she delighted in showing up with several grandkids to show off, and homemade cookies to share. She was the glue behind special events, frequently volunteering to cook and bake despite debilitating arthritis in both hands. Born in Watson, Okla., she was raised in De Queen, Ark. Her husband's career kept her moving. Despite the demands of children, she always found herself in a professional kitchen, either managing or opening her own restaurant or catering businesses in every community, Greg Jarrett said. Among her many places was the Sedona Lodge in Sedona, Ariz. And in the 1950s when the state was upgrading Yosemite, she ran the catering operation for work crews. She was especially good with Southwestern cuisine and made a mean green chili stew, but her son said she could cook anything for anywhere from 50 to 350 people. She also loved the outdoors and fishing and could "out hike all of us," Greg Jarrett said. Services for Barbara Jarrett will be at 2 p.m. today at the Dudley Apple Valley Mortuary in Apple Valley. In addition to her son Greg of Tujunga Canyon, survivors include her sons, L.Q. Reans and Anthony Reans, both of Texas; her daughter Patricia Hoover of Florida; her son Hobart Wehire of Palm Springs; her sister Elsie Doggett of Victorville; 17 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
