The Judge was a confederate soldier having gone gladly as a volunteer under the Stars and Bars, where he served during the Civil War, under the glorious leadership of Lee, in a defeated cause which, however, shed undimmed and undying glory on all who proudly took the "Fling at Death" for the Southland they loved. The Judge had been in poor health for a year or two and his death was not unexpected. The old gentleman was higly respected in the Rufe community where he had lived many years and served as Justice of the Peace for several terms. He leaves behind him his aged wife and his widowed daughter, Mrs. M.A.Parrott who is at present postmaster at Rufe. A large concourse of his friends and neighbors followed him to his grave and saw him laid to sleep where all mankind finds its safest and surest rest. The old Judge will be missed greatly in his "little home town in the hills. (Joel Edgar Lewey, b. Oct. 1848 in Walker County, Alabama) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
