VIRGIL LEWIS Pvt. Virgil LEWIS ,stationed with the U.S.Army in North Africa ,has been killed in an accident, his parents, Mr and Mrs James L. LEWIS, Iron Stob, were notified this week by the war department. The date and details of the accident are unknown, but the telegram stated that a letter would follow. The 22-year-old soldier had been in service about 18 months. He had received his training Fort Sill, Camp Roberts and in Washington before being shipped from Florida directly to Africa in December. A truck driver, he went through the campaigns in that area uninjured. He was a farmer and worked with His father on their farm one mile West of Iron Stob before entering the service. My note: This is my Uncle, Virgil Lewis. I understand that the War had ended by a few days and he drove his truck across a beach that had "been cleaned of land mines" and hit one that detonated. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
