R. MITCHELL PASSES AWAY AT TOM THURSDAY With Rev. Rowe C. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist church of Idabel officiating, funeral services were held from the Chappell Funeral Home at two o'clock Friday afternoon for J. R. Mitchell, 65, of Tom, who died Thursday afternoon. Burial followed in Denison cemetery. Mr. Mitchell had been a resident of the Tom community for the past ten years and had lived in McCurtain county since 1917. He was widely known in the county and became known last year as "the walking candidate," because of his unusual campaign for public weigher. He canvassed the county three times on foot and traversed many thousands of miles in the campaign. It is said that Mitchell held the record for walking in the state of Oklahoma. Besides his immediate family and relatives Mr. Mitchell leaves a large host of friends to mourn his passing. Surviving him are, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Vallie Cabiness of Lewisville, Ark., and Mrs. J.H. Roberty of Sherman, Texas; two sons, John of Tom, and Charles of Sherman, Texas; five brothers, Morgan, Terrell, Texas; Buck, Pete, Hall and George of Texarkana; four sisters, Mrs. L. Kyles, Terrell, Texas; Mrs. Kate Teague, Texarkana; Mrs. Alice Lyle, Lamesa, Texas, and Mrs. Dora Compton, Texarkana.
