Morris, late of this city, 96-years-old, died at his home in Whitfield addition last Thursday and was buried in the Broken Bow cemetery late Friday afternoon. Mr. Morris was a soldier in many of the wars between the government and the Indian Tribes and was a member of Gen. Custer's Command at the time of the massacre, but escaped the fate of his comrades by being detailed that morning to bring up the army supplies. He said when he arrived with the command's camping equipment the ground was strewn with dead soldiers and not a living soul could be seen. During the Civil War he enlisted with Quantrell's gorilla band and for that reason, was never able to secure a pension, notwithstanding the fact that he made repeated applications for a pension. He leaves a wife who is 75 years old and a daughter who lives near Millerton in the county. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to McCurtain Archives http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/mccurtain/mccurtai.htm
