PETERS, MACHINIST, IN FATAL ACCIDENT AT K.C.S. ROUNDHOUSE. De Queen, Ark., Dec. 2. -- Mathias C. Peters, aged 45, died at the De Queen hospital at 3:30p.m. Thursday, November 25, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall from the top of a locomotive at 10:00 that morning. Peters was a machinist for the Kansas City Southern railroad, and was making adjustments on a passenger engine at the round house in De Queen when the pop valve blew off, causing him to fall from the top of the engine to the brick floor below, striking on his head and suffering a fracture of the skull at the base of the brain. Paul Peters, 15-year-old son of the dead man, witnessed the accident. A passing truck was hailed and the injured man rushed to the hospital where he died without regaining consciousness. Peters had been employed here for the past year. His home was at Frog Level, near Hugo, Okla., where his family resided. His son, Paul had arrived in De Queen the night before the accident, being en route to a livestock convention in Chicago. He had accompanied his father to work on the fatal morning. Mr. Peters expected to quit work at noon and visit with his son until No. 4 arrived, when Paul intended to resume his journey. The family consisting of the widow, a daughter Lenora, age 13, and another son, John, age 3, were immediately notified of the accident and started for De Queen, reaching here about 7:00p.m. Decedent was born in Luxemburg, Germany, coming to the United States when a young man. He was an expert mechanic, and was well like by his associates.
