All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::NOT LISTED Garfield Settles Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, for long time educator and former state representative, Garfield Settles, 83 who died Oct. 31 at his home in Millerton. Born Sept. 28, 1910, in Garvin to Robert and Lovie Bunch Settles, he was a farmer, rancher and educator of 34 years in McCurtain County. Schools where he taught include: Redland, Farmers Hill, Cisco, and Holly Creek before he retired in 1979 from Valliant Schools. He served two terms as Oklahoma State Representative, from 1961-1964 and resigned due to poor health. He was an employee with the United State Immigration and Naturalization Service, patrolling the Mexican Border before entering the Armed services in 1943. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and four Bronze Stars while serving in the European Theater during WWII. He was a member of DAV, VFW, OEA, and Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
