Black butane plant. The two were enroute home from Valliant where Whitten had been working when the right wheels left the pavement and the car overturned when it came back on the pavement and it is presumed that it immediately caught fire. G.O. Black who was at his plant, attempted to save the couple with a hand fire extinguisher from his plant but was unsuccessful due to the intensity of the heat from the burning gasoline. The Idabel fire department arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze but the bodies were so badly burned, identification was not possible. Deputy sheriff Walter Irons drove to Broken Bow to check the car license number to make identification. County Attorney Ed Shipp established the woman's identity through papers in her billfold inside her purse. The cause of the accident was unknown. ========= McCurtain County Local Newspaper: October 14, 1948 FUNERAL SERVICES HELD MONDAY FOR DOYLE O.
