Clifton, a painting and building contractor and longtime Sonoma County resident, died Friday in a Santa Rosa hospital after a brief illness. He was 64. Born in Lenna, Okla., he moved to Sonoma County in 1951 after being discharged from the Army. He had been a member of a National Guard unit in Oklahoma that was mobilized and sent to Korea. There he was a driver and wire installer in a communications unit. He earned the Bronze Star. In Sonoma County, he was a painting and remodeling contractor, last working on the Hoffman House and Geyserville Inn in Geyserville. His family said he worked until the day before he died. He lived in Santa Rosa for most of the time he was in Sonoma County. "He was real active," said his son, Mark Clifton of Santa Rosa. "He worked every day of his life." He was married to Alma Jo Clifton for 45 years. Besides his wife and son, he is survived by his other children, Kitty McCormick and Doyle J. Clifton of Santa Rosa, and Mike Clifton of Phoenix; his brothers and sisters, Lula Bryant and Leonard Clifton, both of Santa Rosa, Billy Joe Clifton of Yukon, Okla., Don Clifton of Woodside, Bob Clifton of Oklahoma City, and Nathaniel Clifton of Sacramento; and by eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Family Bible Church in Santa Rosa. Burial will be private at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park in Sebastopol. Donations to United Way of Sonoma-LakeMendocino are requested.
