Floye Louisa Hunter was born near Magazine, Logan County, Arkansas on August 9, 1909, the oldest of eight children born to Walter Monroe Hunter and Flora Texanna Whitaker Hunter. The house where she was born belonged to her maternal grandparents Andrew W. and Louisa M. Poff Whitaker and still stands in the Revilee community where it is known as the 'Fort House.' She was excited to return, in 1990, to the room where she was born, during a trip to the area. As a young woman, she moved with her parents to the Elk City, Oklahoma area. On March 12, 1927, she married Thomas Earl White in Elk City and they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary prior to his death in 1999. Two children, Nina Verl and Ferrill Morris were born to this union. In 1939, Mr. White moved his family to El Reno, where he had accepted a position with the U. S. Federal Reformatory and they resided there until 1964. During that time, Floye was employed by Hix's Grocery, and later, Jackson's Market, in El Reno and Snyder's IGA in Yukon. In 1964 they moved to Sandy Bass Bay on Lake Eufaula, then later returned to Elk City for a short time before moving to Oklahoma City and Moore. They moved to the Southport area of Lake Eufaula where they lived until returning to Moore in 1985. Floye moved to Norman in April, 2000 as one of the first residents of Arbor House Assisted Living Center, where she was active in the life of that community until recently. A 'sweet little lady' is the term most often used by residents and staff to describe her. Although her memory began to fail, she always remembered to say, 'Thank You' to those who helped care for her. Floye was a member of Antioch Christian Church in Oklahoma City. She was no stranger to hard work. Her Bible was filled with notations, among them, II Thessalonians 3:10, 'If any one will not work, let him not eat.' She loved cooking, trying and sharing new recipes; and visitors to her home were always greeted with a cup of coffee or a cool drink and cookies, pie or cake. She also enjoyed reading and taking pictures of her many family members and friends, who were a very important part of her life. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, three sisters, Willa Dene Hunter, Flora Zonell Bevans of Eufaula and an un-named infant; three brothers, Buron Hunter of Washington State, Doyle Hunter and Stanley Hunter both of California, a sisterin-law Ola Mae Hunter, Washington State, and one great grandson, Victor Joe Tillman, Elk City.
