DAVID BELL, born in Huntsville, Ala., May 29, 1825. Admitted to the bar, 1848. Entered Union army in 1861. Raised and became colonel of 23d Pennsylvania Volunteers. Promoted brigadier and distinguished himself in battles of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Second bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Pomoted to major-general, May 23, 1863. At Gettysburg he commanded the 3d corps after Sickels was wounded. Given command of 10th corps, July 23, 1864. Died in Philadelphia, Pa., October 18, 1864.
