Raised a body of cavalry for the Confederacy, and distinguished himself as the leader of successful raids into Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. Received a major-general's commission, but operated independently. Captured in Ohio, and escaped from the jail at Columbus. Killed in Tennessee September 4, 1864.
