Became midshipman at age of sixteen, and captain in 1849. Commanded the gun boat attacks on Forts Henry and Donelson, February, 1862, and on April 7, captured Island No. 10. For these and other naval services he was made rear-admiral, and received the thanks of Congress. Died June 26, 1863.
