Graduated at West Point 1841. Served in Seminole war and through Mexican war. Wounded at Mexico, and brevetted captain. Assigned to California, and promoted to captain 1851. On duty in Kansas in 1859. Ordered to St. Louis February, 1861, where he organized the Union forces. Made brigadier-general of volunteers June, 1861. Dispersed Confederate forces at Potosi, and on June 17 defeated Governor Jackson's State militia. On August 2 defeated McCullough at Dry Springs. Defeated at Wilson's Creek by Price and McCullough, and killed in that battle August 10, 1861.
