ALFRED HOWE, born at Hartford, Conn., November 10, 1827. Studied law. Entered Civil war as colonel. Made brigadier April, 1862. Participated in capture of Fort Wagner. In connection with Porter's fleet, captured Fort Fisher January 15, 1865. Promoted to brigadier in regular army and to major-general of volunteers. Brevetted major-general in regular army March 13, 1865. Made full major-general March 3, 1866, succeeding General Hancock. Retired from army 1888. Died December 16, 1890.
