Entered the U.S. navy, 1821. Fought against Barbary pirates, and was in second in command at attack on Vera Cruz. In 1861 was flag officer of North Atlantic Squadron. Made rear-admiral in 1862. After the Civil war commanded the European Squadron. Died February 20, 1878.
