DAVID, born in Washington, D.C., July 21, 1802. Graduated at West Point 1822. Made captain of dragoons 1833. Served on the frontier. Resigned commission 1836, and went into business in Chicago. On May 14, 1861, made colonel of 6th U.S. Cavalry, and on 17th commissioned brigadier-general. Commanded a division in battle of Bull Run, where he was wounded. In August made major-general of volunteers, and in November succeeded Fremont in command of Western Department. Fought in battle of Fort Donelson. Commanded in Department of the South. In May, 1864, placed in command of Department of West Virginia. Brevetted major-general March 13, 1865. Retired from active service July 31, 1866. Died February 2, 1886.
