JOHN, born in Sweden, January 31, 1803. Entered Swedish army, and promoted to captaincy, 1827. Invented many steam appliances, and, in 1836, the screw propeller. Came to United States in 1839, and in 1841 designed the screw-propeller "Princeton". In 1861 he built the iron-clad "Monitor" which, March 9, 1862, defeated the Confederate iron-clad "Merrimac". In 1881 he built the "Destroyer".
