EDWARD KIRBY, born in St. Augustine, Florida, May 16, 1824. Graduated at West Point 1845. Took part in Mexican war. Taught at West Point. Fought on frontier 1855. Entered Confederate service 1861, with rank of lieutenant-colonel of cavalry. Made a famous record in Department of Southwest as manager of blockade running, and received full rank of general. He did notable field service and won many battles. President of Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company 1866-68. Chancellor of University of Nashville 1870-75. Professor of mathematics in University of Sewanee, Tenn.
