JOHN CHARLES, born in Savannah, Ga., January 21, 1813. Teacher of mathematics in U.S. navy, 1835. Made lieutenant in engineer corps, 1839. Conducted geographical surveys in West, 1842-45. Brevetted captain, but resigned commission. Returned as U.S. senator, from California, 1850-51. In 1856 was first candidate of the Republican party for President. On breaking out of Civil war commissioned major-general and placed in command of Western Department. Next placed in command in Western Virginia, where he was out-generaled by Stonewall Jackson. Resigned his commission when Pope was given command of Western Virginia. Engaged in railroad building. Governor of Arizona, 1878-81. Later, practiced law in New York City. In May, 1890, Congress placed him on retired list of army with rank of major-general. Died July 13, 1890.
