WILLIAM J., born in Savannah, Ga., October 10, 1815. Graduated at West Point 1838. Served in Seminole war, made captain, 1844. Served under Taylor in Mexican war and made prisoner. Brevetted lieutenant-colonel of cavalry. Prepared a system of tactics for United States army. Commandant of cadets at West Point 1856-61. Joined Confederates and assigned to duty at Fort Morgan, with colonel. Afterwards commanded in Arkansas and Kentucky, and fought at Shiloh, where he was promoted to major-general. Made lieutenant-general October 9, 1862, and fought at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Missionary Ridge. Commanded at Charleston and Savannah when these cities capitulated. Later fought at Bentonville, N.C. Surrendered at Durham Station April 26, 1865. Retired to his plantation in Alabama.
