JAMES BARNET, born in Illinois, February 22, 1827. Graduated at West Point 1847. Served in the Mexican war. Acted as Adjutant at West Point, 1854-59. Made assistant adjutant-general, 1861, and acted as chief-of-staff to Generals McDowell and Buell. Made provost-marshal-general of United States, March 17, 1863, and served till August, 1866. Brevetted major-general in 1865, and retired from active service, June, 1881.
