JEFFERSON C., born in Clark county, Ind., March 2, 1828. Fought throughout the Mexican war, and received a commission in the regular army. With Anderson at Fort Sumter April, 1861, and later commanded a division at Tennessee. With Sherman's army during its march to the sea, and in 1865 received commission as brevet major-general, with rank of colonel in 23d Infantry. With Canby, in 1873, in his expedition against the Modocs. Died November 30, 1879.
