FRANCIS PRESTON, born in Lexington, Ky., February 19, 1821. Served in Mexican war. Elected to Congress from Missouri, 1856, 60, 62. Entered Union army. Made major-general, November 29, 1862. Fought at Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. At head of 17th Army Corps' march with Sherman to the sea. On Democratic ticket as Vice-President in 1868 and defeated. Elected in 1871 to U.S. Senate. In 1873, defeated. Became State Superintendent of Insurance.
