JOHN CABELL, born near Lexington, Ky., January 21, 1821. Served in Mexican war as major of volunteers. Frequently elected to Congress. Vice-President of United States, 1851-61. Ran for President, 1860. Expelled from U.S. Senate, December 4, 1861. Appointed Confederate major-general August 5, 1862. Commanded reserves at Shiloh, April 6, 1862. In command of Bragg's reserves at Murfreesboro, December 31, 1862. Served at Chickamauga and Chattanooga, 1863. Defeated Sigel at New Market, Va., May 13, 1864. Joined Lee's army and served at Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864. Joined Early and shared in his defeat at Winchester, September, 1864. Secretary of War in Davis' cabinet till downfall of Confederacy. Went to Europe, on return, devoted himself to law in Kentucky. Died in Lexington, Ky., May 17, 1875.
