EDWARD RICHARD S., born in Kentucky, 1819. Graduated at West Point, 1839. Served through Mexican war. Made Colonel of 19th U.S. Infantry May, 1861. Defeated General Sibley in New Mexico. In command of U.S. troops during draft riots in New York in 1863. Made major-general of volunteers and captured Mobile April 12, 1865. Made major-general in regular army, and received surrender of General Richard Taylor. In 1873 led U.S. forces against the Modocs and was treacherously killed in the Oregon lava-beds.
