JOHN BELL, born at Orwingsville, Ky., June 20, 1831. Graduated at West Point 1853. Entered Confederate service 1861. Distinguished himself in Seven Days' battles on Peninsula, and at Antietam and Gettysburg. Made major-general and assigned to command under Bragg. Lost a leg at Chickamauga. Commanded a corps in campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta, 1864. Succeeded Johnston in command of Confederate army of the West, fought several severe battles, but forced to evacuate Atlanta September 2, 1864. Moved northward, but checked at Franklin, Tenn. Defeated by Thomas at Nashville, December 15, 1864, and remnants of his army passed to General Richard Taylor. Retired from active service, and died of yellow fever at New Orleans August 30, 1879.
